MANDY SHAPANSKY becomes the President and
Chief Executive Officer of Xerox Canada, succeeding Kevin Warren who is now heading up
the company’s U.S. Solutions Group, based in
Rochester. Shapansky was most recently the
Chief Financial Officer and Chief of Staff for
Xerox Canada, a role she held since 2002. She
has been with Xerox since 1985. In her new
role as President and CEO, Shapansky will
lead Xerox Canada’s team of 3,600 employees,
which generates revenues of over $1.2 billion.
Shapansky holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in
economics from the University of Waterloo
and is a chartered accountant.
IAN BAITZ, acting Chair of Ryerson’s Graphic
Communications Management program, and
Gary Marron, President and CEO of HIFLEX
North America, celebrate the donation of software for teaching students about JDF-based
workflow. The degree-level program, based in
Toronto, is currently installing HIFLEX MIS
and Web2Print systems. Marron was in the
Toronto region for a 2-day Automation Solutions Network event (formerly known as the
JDF User Group) taking place at Ampersand
Printing, one of the world’s leading integrators of JDF-based systems.
GREG FRIESSER becomes the General Manager of
Illinois-based Sakurai USA Inc., which also oversees the distribution of Sakurai printing presses
in the Canadian market. He has served as Director of Operations for Sakurai USA for the
past two and a half years, while carrying over 36
years of printing industry experience. Also, John
Wokurka, a 12-year veteran of Sakurai USA, was
promoted to Operations Manager with responsibility for logistics, spare parts, service and administrative support. This August, Sakurai is
celebrating its 65th year in business and 20th anniversary as a U.S. corporation with a summer
Open House at its Illinois location.
WAYNE WILBUR, President & CEO of Astley
Gilbert, self-described as Canada’s largest repro-graphics provider, purchased Embassy Digital,
which is self-described as the country’s largest
photo-book printer. The move allows Astley
Gilbert to expand its reach in regions of Burlington and Oakville. Headquartered in Scarborough, Astley Gilbert has existing locations in
Guelph, Kitchener, Markham, Mississauga,
Toronto, Waterloo and Vaughan. The company
was founded in 1970, while Embassy Digital, led
by Bryan Payne, began operations in May 1990.
MOYA GREENE, CEO of Canada Post, has been
hired to take on the challenge that is Royal
Mail, the Crown corporation responsible for
UK’s postal services. She will be the first non-Briton and first woman to take the post. Greene
has been CEO of Canada Post since 2005 and
will begin her position at Royal Mail in July.
The new role will have her overseeing the semi-privatization of the system, which has only seen
a return to profitability in the last two years.
The organization also has a massive pension
shortfall as well as continuing labour conflicts,
leading to disruptive strikes last October.
Greene also serves on the Board of Directors at
Tim Hortons and previously held executive
roles at CIBC, TD and Bombardier.
SHARPER’s Jason Wingert, Controller; Dave
Thirkell, Operations Manager; and Dave Itter,
IS Manager, oversaw the installation of an HP
Indigo 5500 press. Based in Calgary, Sharper
primarily focuses on the health-care sector in
the region, producing applications like postcards, appointment cards, calendars, magnets,
tote bags and even leashes for pet-care purposes. The HP Indigo 5500 can run at up to 68
full-colour pages per minute (ppm), 136 ppm
in 2-colour, and 272 ppm in monochrome.
Founded in 1985, Sharper now employs 50
people in a 15,000-square-foot facility.
CANADIAN PRINTING INDUSTRIES SECTOR COUN-
CIL received additional funding to support
seven more printing-industry hires in the current year of its Career Focus subsidy program.
Employers who meet the eligibility criteria established by the Government of Canada will be
required to guarantee a minimum of four
months of continuous employment for a new
or recent graduate, who must work for at least
30 hours per week. In return, employers will receive a subsidy representing one third of a new
employee’s total wage, up to a maximum of
$12,750 per employee.
ALAIN LEMAIRE, President and CEO of Cascades, announced a $10 million investment to
build a new facility at the East Angus mill in
Quebec, which is part of the company’s Specialty Products Group. The facility, designed for
the production of kraft-type recycled pulp, will
house a pulping machine, loading platforms
and a warehouse for waste paper. According to
the company, the unit will be able to convert
daily more than 200 tonnes of old corrugated
cardboard into recycled pulp, which allows
Cascades to increase the recycled content of its
kraft papers from 43 percent to 70 percent. The
old corrugated cardboard to be converted will
come from the company’s sorting centres. Cascades Specialty Products Group employs over
2,500 people across 44 business units located
in North America and Europe.
MICHAEL WILLIAM BURKE, founder of Toronto-based Grenville Printing, passed away at the
age of 83 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Burke was born in Montreal and graduated
from Sir George William University (now
Concordia) with a Bachelor’s degree in commerce. In 1968, he founded Grenville Management and Printing Ltd., which grew to become
recognized as one of the top printers in the region. In 2005, the company separated into
Grenville Printing and Grenville Management
Inc., the former of which was purchased by
Grafikom in October 2006. Grenville Management continued as a holding company for Inplex Facility Logistics before Inplex was
reabsorbed as Grenville Management in 2009.
This company has restarted its printing arm
and today once again operates as Grenville
Management and Printing.
BALDWIN TECHNOLOGY agreed to purchase
Nordson UV Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of
Nordson Corp., which develops UV curing systems. Nordson is to retain its industrial UV curing product lines. “We have had a mutually
beneficial alliance with Nordson for several
years, so this combination is a logical step in that
relationship,” stated Karl S. Puehringer, CEO of
Baldwin. “It will enable our customers to partner
with a single-source for both IR [infra-red] drying and UV [ultra violet] curing on both offset
and digital printing.” The Nordson UV business,
which sells systems under its own brand name,
as well as the Horizon and Primarc brand
names, is currently based in Slough, England.
The transaction was expected to close by June
30, when Nordson UV would be renamed
Baldwin UV Ltd.
QUAD/GRAPHICS was scheduled to begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange on July 6
following the completion of its Worldcolor
acquisition. At press time, the company had received approval from the Minister of Industry
under the Investment Canada Act, as well as a
final order from the Quebec Superior Court
pursuant to the Canada Business Corporations
Act, and 92 percent Worldcolor shareholder
approval. Quad/Graphics announced its intention to acquire Worldcolor in January 2010.
Worldcolor and Quad/Graphics had aggregate
non-audited revenues of US$5.1 billion – for
the 12-month period ended September 30,
2009 – and aggregate non-audited, adjusted
EBITDA of US$647 million.
JOHN HUME, President of Toronto-based Hume
Intermedia Services Inc., oversaw the installation of a new Standard Horizon BQ-470 PUR
perfect binder into his Toronto plant, which is
driven by three Xerox iGen presses, two offset
presses and extensive fulfillment services. Purchased through KBR Graphics, the BQ-470 PUR
is a fully automated, 4-clamp machine capable
of producing up to 1,350 perfect-bound books
per hour, while also able to bind books that are
up to 2.5-inches thick, using polyurethane-reac-tive (PUR) adhesive. Hume Intermedia was established 22 years ago and today employs 44
people with a production base of over 200
clients across various printing markets in
Canada, United States and Europe.
RUBEN SILVA, Managing Director of Agfa
Canada; Renel Bouchard, President of Nustream Graphic; and Peter Wilkens, CEO of
Agfa Graphics North America celebrate a new
partnership in which Quebec-based Nustream
is to distribute Agfa’s prepress technology. Industry veteran Jonathan Rogers is managing
Ontario-based accounts for Nustream, while
Steve Daigle is to handle all Quebec-based accounts. Daigle was previously the President of
Montreal-based Vic Couleur.
GLACIER MEDIA is working with a Washington
State used-press retailer called Impressions
Worldwide to install 40 Goss Community SSC
printing units, after signing a deal to print The
Globe and Mail’s Manitoba and Saskatchewan
editions. Glacier Media, which primarily generates revenues in various publishing sectors
(43 trade magazines, 28 directories and 35
Websites), aims to complete the Goss Community SSC installation by the end of this
year’s summer.
